The Bigger Picture

Environmental action begins with understanding the challenge.

The Center for Inclusive Community Transformation (CICTRANS) participated in the 2026 Montgomery County H2O Summit, an event bringing together environmental organizations, practitioners, and community stakeholders to explore ways to protect water resources and strengthen environmental responsibility.

Hosted by the Montgomery County Department of Environmental Protection at the M-NCPPC Wheaton Headquarters, the summit took place from 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. and focused on practical approaches to preventing pollution before it reaches waterways.

Why it matters Healthy waterways depend on prevention, responsible environmental practices, informed communities, and collaboration among stakeholders.

Ideas in Practice

Catching pollution at the source.

The summit explored ways to protect water quality before pollution reaches streams, rivers, and other water bodies. Discussions addressed winter road salt use, stormwater management, litter prevention, and the protection of trees across the Chesapeake Bay region.

These approaches demonstrate the importance of prevention and thoughtful environmental management. They also highlight the role of community education in helping people understand how everyday practices affect the environment.

What We Take Forward

Four lessons for stronger, more resilient communities.

01

Prevent environmental harm

Addressing pollution at its source can help protect water resources and surrounding ecosystems.

02

Promote practical solutions

Appropriate stormwater management and responsible environmental practices can support healthier ecosystems.

03

Strengthen community knowledge

Environmental education helps communities understand challenges and take informed action.

04

Build strategic partnerships

Collaboration creates opportunities to share knowledge and explore solutions that respond to local needs.

Looking Ahead

Turning knowledge into meaningful action.

The knowledge and connections gained from the summit are relevant to CICTRANS’ work in environmental management, community development, and sustainable livelihoods. While the event focused on water protection in Montgomery County, its broader principles can inform environmental awareness and community-led initiatives in Cameroon.

Potential next steps include maintaining contact with organizations met during the event, sharing relevant learning materials, and exploring opportunities for knowledge exchange and collaboration. Through continued learning and strategic partnerships, CICTRANS aims to strengthen community capacity and support approaches that protect natural resources and improve livelihoods.
